Regional Unit/Quarterly Final Assessment Guidelines

December 5, 2017

Regional Unit/Quarterly Final Assessment Guidelines:

East & West Regions:

As a reminder, and as outlined in the Sterling Grading and Reporting Policies, Elementary teachers are required to conduct, at a minimum, two formative and two summative assessments per quarter. Secondary teachers are required to conduct, at a minimum, four formative and two summative assessments per quarter.

In addition, Secondary teachers are required to send summative assessments (end of unit/quarter tests) to their appropriate SL for review to provide support. If curriculum outcomes are not being met consistently, SLs will schedule an appointment with the teacher(s) to provide more support where needed.

In regards to end of quarter exams, and with the elimination of Progression Exams this year, it has been left to the discretion of the teacher as to whether or not they would like to assess the students via a formal exam process. Whether you administer a cumulative exam/project or one that covers the most recent unit taught, these will be inputted into Canvas as a regular assessment. End of Quarter and/or Unit Exams/Projects will be counted towards students' GPAs, but are NOT weighted any differently than normal. It is entirely of the teachers' discretion as to whether the exams are cumulatively created or not. In addition, there will be NO special schedule as to when they are taken.

If you have additional questions, please contact curriculum@sterling.education

North Region:

As outlined in the Sterling Grading and Reporting Policy, Secondary teachers are required to conduct a minimum of 4 formative assessments per quarter and a minimum of 2 summative assessments per quarter. With the elimination of Progression Exams this year, it has been left to the discretion of the teacher whether or not they would like to assess the students via a formal exam process (Midterm/Final Exam). For those that are conducting Midterm and Final exams as their summative assessments in their courses, these will be inputted into Canvas as a regular assessment. It is up to the teachers' discretion as to whether or not the exams are cumulative of the semester and when these exams will be taking place. There will be no special schedule as to when exams are to take place.

For students that are writing provincial examinations that are mandated by their province, the exam schedule will be created and determined by your District Principal. These schedules will be released to staff once finalized. Again, this only applies to provinces that have provincially-mandated exams.
