        English I

English I develops the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively in reading, writing, speaking and listening in seven connecting units (note: this number is subject to change). This course is taught in an SDL format in which students continue to employ wide-ranging vocabulary, correct use of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and develop personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed when reading and writing argumentative/discursive, descriptive and/or narrative texts. Students are also encouraged to read widely, both for their own enjoyment and to further their awareness of the ways in which English can be used.

English I also develops more general analysis and communication skills such as synthesis, inference, and the ability to order facts and present opinions effectively. As in Modules A and B, habits in English I and II will spiral throughout the grade levels, offering students the chance to develop a toolbox of strategies that not only deepen their comprehension, but that will also serve as preparation for the Cambridge exams taken in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade, and most importantly, the real-world.

        English III

A one year course, English III is taught in an SDL format, similarly to English I and II. This AS Level course uses a variety of texts and materials to promote proficiency, achievement and performance, while wholly engaging students in interpreting and producing texts in a variety of styles and for a variety of audiences. The syllabus enables students to achieve great fluency, accuracy and confidence in the language as it is spoken and written, thereby also improving communication skills. Students will learn how to improve their use of English in a variety of situations, understanding how to read texts and other source materials, how to extract information, initiate conversations and respond to questions both orally and in writing. A firm foundation for further study of language (in use) and linguistics (the scientific study of language and its structure) will be laid out in this course and will serve as preparation for the Cambridge examination (Papers 1 and 2) that will be taken at the end of the course. In addition, English III strategically helps to meet the basic understandings of the A Level course which students will be taking in 12th grade.

        English IV

English IV, a one year course taught in an SDL format, is based on the new Cambridge International A Level English Language syllabus. It gives learners the opportunity to study English language and its use in contemporary communication. It aims to encourage critical response to text in a range of forms, styles and contexts, and to promote skills of communication, reading, research and analysis. Through their study, learners will develop an ability to read and analyze material, gaining further knowledge and understanding of English language features and issues, and writing clearly, accurately, creatively and effectively for different purposes and audiences. In addition, students are asked to demonstrate informed knowledge of topics including how language is acquired by children, aspects of spoken as well as written language and issues and debates in linguistic theory. This course builds on progression from the existing AS Level English Language taught in English III and will serve as preparation for the Cambridge examination (Papers 3 and 4) that will be taken at the end of the course.
